How to Create a Modern Alley Within the White City?

Kalisher-Mohaliver, Tel Aviv

The project is located in the Kerem Israel neighborhood of Tel Aviv, near the Shalom Meir Tower, the famous Carmel Market, and Nachalat Binyamin Street.

Two buildings, situated on two perpendicular streets, form this unique project. At the corner between the two buildings is a historically conserved building, not executed by this office.

When we set out to design this project, the city of Tel Aviv was our main inspiration. Using the White City as a planning foundation created an opportunity for an architectural event that forms spaces for both residents and the public.
Designing two separate buildings facing each other on different streets posed a complex architectural challenge. It provided the opportunity to plan new pedestrian walkways within the city. Two walkways are planned to meet in the middle at a small public square where the entryways to the two buildings are located.

The project pays tribute to Tel Aviv's original pedestrian walkways and the historic buildings of the White City.

Unlike the typical practice in Tel Aviv, where buildings are entered from the street façade, this design creates a situation where access to the buildings requires passing through a protected walkway, away from the street. This allows the visitor to enter the lobby from the side of the building, where the public square is located, offering a shaded haven with a refreshing breeze from the sea.
